Healthcare Professionals-Risking their Lives to Save Ours
Most of us have interacted with healthcare professionals at some point in our lives. Some people might have required more medical care than others. You might have experienced that healthcare professionals are indispensable and play a vital role in our lives.
Right from the birth of a baby to its death, we need the help of healthcare professionals in some form or the other.
Most of us use the terms “healthcare professionals” and “doctors” interchangeably implying that doctors are the only ones who provide healthcare services. This is far from true. Doctors are no doubt a vital part of the healthcare ecosystem, but they are not the only ones.
The healthcare industry has a whole lot of professionals who provide services to us to help us lead healthy lives. Healthcare professionals we normally interact with are, doctors, nurses, medics, pathologists, pharmacists, technicians, and more.
Healthcare professionals take care of our health while sometimes risking their health and well-being.
Let’s look at the role of different healthcare professionals and the potential risks they face:
Each of these professionals is qualified in his field to provide us with a specific type of medical care.
- A doctor is someone who diagnoses diseases and provides treatment for it. He may refer a patient to a specialist doctor if the case is complicated. Whether it is a general physician or a specialist doctor, he exposes himself to risk because he physically examines his patients and several diseases are transmitted through physical contact as we have witnessed in the case of COVID 19.
- Doctors are supported by nurses who maintain the medical records of the patient. They also record the vital statistics of the patient and provide them to the doctor to help him comprehend the condition of his patient. Since nurses are present by the patient’s side, they are at risk of catching the infection from the patient suffering from a contagious disease.
- In this day and age when diseases are rampant, we need to monitor our parameters to ensure that we remain healthy. We have the pathologists who perform blood tests, etc. to check for anomalies in the parameters. They perform an important role where they test and analyze the readings of different parameters. This can be a risky job because many diseases are spread through microbes in the blood, sputum, urine, stool, etc., which they examine.
- Medics are professionals who provide emergency care to patients. They use different equipment and techniques to provide first-aid to the patients. Techniques like mouth-to-mouth respiration, etc. are provided by medics and they can prove to be dangerous as they can directly lead to infections.
So, we see how healthcare professionals put themselves at a risk to ensure that we remain hale and hearty. Unfortunately, we do not realize this and tend to take them for granted.
