Responsibilities of an Anesthesiologist

Responsibilities of an Anesthesiologist

We have all heard of anesthesiologists who give medication to patients before a surgical procedure so that do not feel any pain during the procedure. However, not many of us are aware of the multiple responsibilities that an anesthesiologist’s shoulders.

Here’s an overview of what anesthesiologists do!

Providing Pain Relief During Surgeries

An anesthesiologist evaluates the condition of a patient before surgery to determine the medicine and dosage best suited for him. He also determines what type of anesthesia is required by the patient.

3 types of anesthesia may be administered depending on the condition of the patient and the type of surgery:

General anesthesia: This type of anesthesia puts the patient to “sleep” before the surgery so that he does not feel any pain during the procedure.

Local Anesthesia: This type of anesthesia is administered close to the nerves of the area that is to be operated on.

Sedation: These are intravenous drugs to calm the patient so that they are unaware of the procedure being performed on their body.

The anesthesiologist administers the medication to the patient before the surgery and observes his condition under the effect of the medication. He gives the green signal to the surgeon that the patient is ready for the surgery. The anesthesiologist is present throughout the surgery to observe the patient. While the surgeon continues with the procedure, the anesthesiologist takes care of the medical management of the patient.

Post Surgery

The anesthesiologist is responsible for the overall care of the patient after the surgery. He is responsible for reversing the effect of the anesthesia. He monitors the condition of the patient so that he recovers completely without any complications. The anesthesiologist is supported by other healthcare professionals including specialist nurses.

Taking care of Critical Cases

The anesthesiologist takes care of critical care patients and those suffering from trauma. They diagnose the patients and help manage the respiratory, digestive, renal, nervous, and circulatory functions of the patients. They also attend to unconscious patients.

Emergency Care

Anesthesiologists attend to patients in emergency care by providing advanced life support, airway and cardiac care, and pain management. They also help in stabilizing the patient and preparing them for surgical procedures.

Pain Management

Anesthesiologists may also specialize in pain management and attend to patients who are suffering from pain due to any reason. They can take care of patients suffering from chest pain, abdominal pain, headache, burns, herpes, and more.

Besides these anesthesiologists play a role in different types of medical systems such as obstetrics and gynecology, etc.

Anesthesiologists are always present to take care of our health and bodily functions as and when we need them. They play a vital role in the healthcare industry. We cannot ignore their efforts in keeping the healthcare system functioning seamlessly.

To acknowledge the efforts of anesthesiologists, MEND Threads has introduced a unique concept! We create shirts and t-shirts to acknowledge the hard work of these doctors. Our anesthesia shirts and t-shirts have artwork dedicated to the anesthesiologists. The graphics on these shirts/t-shirts are created by professional artists. You can choose from our wide collection of anesthesia shirts/t-shirts available in different colors and sizes.
